The Strength of Materials Department is one of the oldest in Lviv Polytechnic National University. The strength of materials teaching as a fundamental engineering discipline began in 1871 in the Mechanic and the Theory of Soils Departments of the then Lviv Technical Academy.

History

The Strength of Materials laboratory was established in 1898 as a subdivision of mechanic and research station. In 1904 the Technical Mechanics Department was officially opened, and the strength of materials disciplines were taught by Maksymilian Huber (M. Huber), the author of the popular energy theory of materials solidity. In 1908 M. Huber headed the Department. In 1919 the Department received the title of the second Mechanic Department. After M. Huber moved to Warsaw Polytechnic University in 1928, lectures and laboratory classes were delivered by professor Volodymyr Buzhynskii (W. Burzyński). In 1929 on a competitive basis he was appointed a head of the Technical Mechanics Department, and worked there until 1946.

After the restoration of study process in Lviv Polytechnic Institute in 1944 the Department was headed by: the Candidate of Technical Sciences, associate professor Hloholskyy Volodymyr Kostiantynovych (1944-1946; 1947-1952), member of the Academy of Science of the Ukrainian SSR, Ph.D., Professor Savin Heorhiy (1946-1947), member of National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, Ph.D., Professor Leonov Mychaylo (1953-1956), Ph.D., associate professor Afendik Leonid (1956-1964), Ph.D., associate professor Kopeykin Iyriy (1964-1965), Ph.D., Professor Posatskiy Stepan (1965-1971), Ph.D., Professor Mocherniyk Dmytro (1971-1993), Ph.D., associate professor Bilobran Bohdan (1993-1996), Ph.D., Professor Khay Myroslav (1996-2002 ). Since 2003 the Department is headed by Ph.D., Professor Kharchenko Yevhen.

Administratively the Department of the strength of materials refers to the Department of engineering and building (1944-1945), was general institute (1945-1946) and a part of different faculties: mechanic (1947-1954), engineering and building (1955-1971), mechanic and machinery construction (1992-2001), institute of engineering mechanics and transport (2001-2008) and since 2008 joined the Institute of building and environment engineering.

In 1975, the Department organized a research laboratory RL-59. About 30 contractual works were done for various industrial companies and organizations: UMN Druzhba, Lvivsilmash (Lviv agricultural machinery), UMG Lvivtransgaz; Ukrtransgas AC; NVO Kyiv Promarmatura; VNDIBT, Moscow; NVO Energia, Moscow; Neftegaz Stroymash, Briansk, Russia; and others. Recently the research studies for UMN Druzhba and UMG Lvivtransgaz are developing particularly active. The Student Design Bureau (SPKB) of machine and structure elements strength testing had successfully operated at the department during the 60-80 years.

Until 1972, the Department provided the study of strength of materials for all Institutes’ engineering specialties. After the launch of the discipline Applied Mechanics, teaching of the strength of materials short courses was transferred to the Department of theoretical mechanics, machine parts and devices of fine mechanics, which led to a significant reduction in the quantitative number of the Department of Strength of Materials. At the Department along with classic course of strength of materials also are delivered such lectures as: elasticity theory bases, plasticity and creep, the basic theory of fracture and contact problems, numerical methods for calculating core systems. Since the 70-ies the Department is basic for the strength of materials in the west region. Also it coordinates organizational and educational work in universities, colleges and technical schools in Volyn, Zakarpattia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv, Rivne, Ternopil and Chernivtsi regions.

In 1976, the Department of Strength of Materials together with its laboratory was relocated from the main building in new built Building II, where it is now.Among the important scientific and methodological achievements of the Department are the textbook in Strength of Materials by the professor Posatskyj S.(1963 and 1973), scientific manuals in The Theory of Elasticity by the Sc.D. Olkhovyj I., in The Fracture Mechanics by the professor Haj M., lecture notes in French in The Theory of Elasticity by the Sc.D. Bilobran B., "Short Course in The Strength of Materials" tutorial by the associate professors Olkhovyj I.M., Stasiuk B., Stankevych V., the "Applied Mechanics" tutorial by the professors Pavlysche V., Kharchenko E., Barvinskyi A. and the Sc.D. Harshnyeva Y., the "Strength of Materials" tutorial by associate professors Gurniak L., Hutsuliak Y. and Yuzkiva T.

Research area

Researches in the field of mechanics of solid deformable body, dynamics and strength of machines and structures at the Department of Strength of Materials were launched by well-known scientist M. Huber. Further detailed studies in this area are connected with works of Buzhynskyj V., Savin G., Leonova M., Afendik L., Kopejkin Y., Posatskyj S., Mocherniuk D., Haj M., who in different years headed the Department.

At present the active research work is also carried out. The department is focused on solving problems of rational design of technical facilities. Researches are aimed at developing modern methods of parts and assemblies calculation for various conditions of power and thermal load. Over the last 45 years the faculty published eight textbooks and manuals, 9 monographs, 750 research papers, received 56 author’s certificates and patents for inventions, defended three doctoral (Mocherniuk D., Sokil E., Bilobran B.) and 22 Ph.D. theses, published about 150 scientific and methodical development works.

Significant attention is paid to student involvement in researches through the student’s scientific organization clubs, participation in scientific conferences and different levels competitions in Strength of Materials. The best students scientific works were repeatedly awarded with diplomas at the All-Union and republican competitions. Over the past five years students of the Strength of Materials science club won on All-Ukrainian competitions in the Strength of Material.
